NIE Household Solar Water Heating Scheme!To help stimulate the uptake of renewable technologies in Northern Ireland, the Northern Ireland Electricity (NIE) SMART Programme will provide support for solar water heating for households in Northern Ireland following the closure of the Low Carbon Buildings Programme Stream 1 grant for solar water heating on 24th May 2010. The following grant is available from the NIE SMART programme which is managed by NIE Energy on behalf of NIE:
Funding will not be available for retrospective installations – only applications submitted from the 3rd June 2010 will be eligible for funding from this new grant. More information is available below:
Please note that NIE does not guarantee or underwrite the performance of any technology and it is your responsibility to ask accredited installers (or the manufacturer) what reassurances they can provide in terms of the expected performance of the system. It is your responsibility to check with your local authority about whether or not Building Control or planning permission is required. Please note that you must have received confirmation about statutory consents before submitting an application for grant funding from NIE. If you proceed without consents then your application will be invalid and you will not be able to claim a grant. Please download an application form here and fill it in carefully – you must sign the application form as your agreement to the terms and conditions of the grant. NIE Household Grant for Solar Photovoltaics (PV) and Wind!To help stimulate the uptake of renewable technologies in Northern Ireland, Northern Ireland Electricity (NIE) will provide support for wind and solar photovoltaics (PV) following the closure of the Low Carbon Buildings Programme Stream 1 grant for renewable electricity technologies in early February 2010. The following grants are available from the NIE SMART programme which is managed by NIE Energy on behalf of NIE:
Funding will not be available for retrospective installations – only applications submitted from the 8th March 2010 will be eligible for funding from this new grant (PV applications submitted from 19th July 2010 will be eligible for the increased grant levels). The guidelines for support are available below:

Clarification on the position of MCS products which are in transition It is your responsibility to check with your local authority about whether or not planning permission is required. If you proceed without planning permission then your application will be invalid and you will not be able to claim a grant. Please note that farmers who are on a domestic tariff with NIE Energy will be eligible to apply for the grant but farmers who are on a business tariff are not eligible. Support for Businesses for Biomass HeatingFollowing the success of previous programmes for non domestic biomass heating, the NIE SMART programme is launching further grants to support non domestic biomass installations. Applications are welcome from businesses who are considering installing a biomass boiler or stove. Through the previous support programmes we have supported installations at outdoor activity centres, restaurants, retail outlets, engineering firms and even funeral directors. Installers must be approved through the Microgeneration Certification Scheme or the Renewable Energy Installer Academy, and products through the Microgeneration Certification Scheme or the Energy Technology List. The funding will be used to support, through a grant, the installation of biomass heating systems including wood pellet and wood chip. The following grants are available from the NIE SMART programme which is managed by NIE Energy on behalf of NIE:
Funding support can be claimed for the cost of the boiler, the installation of the boiler and the fuel store but not for radiators or thermal stores. The application form for grants and the guidelines for support are available below: Applicants receiving funding for the same renewable project from any other NIE programme will not be funded through this scheme. This is a limited offer from NIE and is available on a ‘first come, first served’ basis – retrospective grants will not be offered for existing installations or installations which are underway. Some installations will be profiled for PR purposes to raise awareness of the uptake of renewable energy in Northern Ireland. Please send your completed application form to: Gwyneth Compston Householder Low Carbon Buildings Programme Top-Up from NIE For Solar Thermal.The Low Carbon Buildings Programme Stream 1 (LCBP Stream 1) is now closed for all technologies. Anyone who has received a grant offer letter from LCBP should apply for a NIE Top-up grant for solar water heating immediately. Please complete the application form, sign it and post it to the address below along with a copy of your grant offer from LCBP: Delta Hamilton, Renewables for Housing AssociationsAs LCBP stopped offering grants for all technologies in May 2010, this programme is closed. If any Housing Association wishes to install a renewable energy technology then please send a brief outline of the project to: Gwyneth Compston Wind turbines for schools.As LCBP stopped offering grants for electricity generating technologies in February 2010, this programme is closed. All NIE grant offers already made will be honoured. Ursula Toman, Northern Ireland Energy Agency, who managed the scheme can be contacted at 028 9026 5996. If any school wishes to install photovoltaics or wind, without LCBP funding, please send a brief outline of the project to Delta Hamilton, Support for Schools, NIE Energy, Woodchester House, 50 Newforge Lane, Belfast, BT9 5NW. Renewable Energy for Community Organisations.As LCBP stopped offering grants for all technologies in May 2010, this programme is closed. Anyone who has received a grant offer letter form LCBP should apply for a NIE Top-up grant immediately. Grants Please note all NIE Top-up grants will be capped at £5,000 for each technology. Applicants receiving funding for the same renewable project from any other NIE programme will not be funded through the NIE Community LCBP Phase 2 Top-up. If any Community group wishes to install a renewable energy technology without LCBP funding, please send a brief outline of the project to Delta Hamilton, NIE Energy, Woodchester House, 50 Newforge Lane, Belfast, BT9 5NW. Help with Hydro - Revised NIE Hydro FundingTo date, the Smart 1 programme has funded 5 small scale hydro installations, with 5 further grant offers made. The installed projects total 124kWe and have a good geographical spread across N. Ireland from Plumbridge to Larne. Funding for hydro is now being revised from 1st March 2009, Grants will only be available for new schemes in Northern Ireland, and will not be paid retrospectively. Please ensure you have all statutory approvals granted eg. abstraction licence before applying to NIE for funding. NIE will fund a 1kWe upwards system at £500 per kWe, up to a maximum of £20,000, whichever is smaller. Payment of the grant will be made on commissioning of the system. A letter of grant offer will be provided to eligible applicants in the meantime. Please click here for application guidelines.
