Victoria Park Primary School Shines

11 Mar 2010

Victoria Park primary school is a shining example to us all on how to save energy as NIE Energy has donated free energy saving light bulbs to the East Belfast primary school.

Lynsey McClean from NIE Energy recently met with school Principal, Mrs Gourley, along with some of the Victoria Park primary school pupils to present them with free energy saving light bulbs to distribute in the school.

Lynsey from NIE Energy said: “Giving these free energy saving bulbs to Victoria Park school pupils marks the end of NIE Energy giving 30,000 free energy saving bulbs away across Northern Ireland. We met at Castle Espie in Comber as we have also given this Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust property some free energy saving bulbs.

“NIE Energy is keen to encourage children and adults to save some energy and money. We are trying to demonstrate to the pupils that one simple way to do this is through using energy saving light bulbs.

“Lights make up the biggest part of an electricity bill for a typical household. Using energy saving light bulbs has always been a bright idea for your pocket and the environment. They use up to 80% less electricity than a standard bulb, but produce the same amount of light. By replacing a standard bulb with an energy saving one in a light that is on often, you will save about £10 a year off the electricity bill.

“Technology has moved on a lot since energy saving light bulbs were first invented, and so has the way that they look. In fact, whatever type of bulb you use to light your home, there are sure to be stylish energy saving equivalents.”

Mrs Gourley, Principal of Victoria Park primary school, said: “Victoria Park primary school is delighted to be receiving free energy saving light bulbs from NIE Energy and to be part of the celebrations in marking the end of NIE Energy’s 30,000 Big Bulb Giveaway.

“At Victoria Park primary school we are keen to encourage our pupils to save energy and money. Through distributing these energy saving light bulbs, it is a good opportunity to raise awareness of energy efficiency to our school children and local community.”
