CALL FOR COMMUNITIES TO JOIN THE RENEWABLE REVOLUTION!
20 Oct 2009
Calling all community organisations! Northern Ireland Electricity is reminding community groups and other not-for-profit organisations across Northern Ireland about the additional funding on offer for renewable energy projects.
The NIE Smart programme is offering a 15% top up on the Low Carbon Buildings Programme (LCBP) Phase 2 funding, bringing the grant support up to 65% of the total project.
NIE Energy’s Gwyneth Compston is involved in the scheme and she says there’s never been a better time for communities to look at the benefits of renewable energy. “We want community groups, charities and other not-for-profit organisations across Northern Ireland to take full advantage of this grant support and look at how renewable technologies could benefit the people in their local area.
“In the past we have successfully helped community groups to actively embrace renewable energy technologies such as solar water heating, solar photovoltaic panels, biomass heating and wind turbines. The various organisations are reaping the environmental and financial benefits of these low carbon energy sources and are setting a great example and leading the way within their communities of how to make best use of renewable energy.”
In recent months a wide range of groups, including youth clubs, sports clubs and charities have accessed the support available. NIE Smart funding is available on a first come, first served basis and is capped at £5,000 per technology. To be eligible to apply, community groups need to have made a successful application to the LCBP Phase 2 programme. Accredited installers and products must be used and all relevant approvals, such as building control or planning permission must be in place.
