Cheaper Electricity for City

28 Jul 2009

Dove House staff members and local Sinn Fein Councillor Peter Anderson recently met with NIE Energy representatives to discuss electricity prices and help available for NIE Energy customers in the local area.

Wilma Stewart from NIE Energy said she was glad to have the opportunity to meet with Maureen Collins and Eugene Bradley from Dove House, along with Councillor Peter Anderson, to let them know how people in the local area could get cheaper electricity.

Eugene Bradley Co-ordinator, Neighbourhood Assist, Dove House urges the public to take up the offer of the keypad.

Mr Bradley said: “The best option is to pay your electric bill by direct debit as there is a 4% discount, but we recognise that a large number of consumers do not have this facility therefore, we believe that a Keypad is the next best option.

“Just like your mobile, you pay as you go and get credit and a guarantee that the electric does not go out at the weekends. The Keypad prevents any large unmanageable bills coming in quarterly and there is also a 2.5% discount and no hidden charges.

“If you are already in arrears, a small percentage is taken out each time you buy your electric credit, which will quickly start reducing your arrears. Keypad will also educate the public regarding electricity consumption. You can establish which appliance is using the most electric and regulate your usage, helping the environment as well as reducing costs.”

During the meeting, Wilma, along with Kerstie Forsyth from NIE Energy, went through the ways local people can get discounted electricity by switching, for free, to a Keypad meter.

Wilma said: “We know household budgets are tight and electricity payments are a struggle for some people so NIE Energy has a way you can pay as you go along for the electricity you use, as well as getting discount.

“We can change your existing meter free of charge to a ‘pay as you go’ Keypad meter. What this means is you can pay to suit your budget and needs and you get 2.5% discount off all electricity used. It’s similar to a pay as you go mobile phone in that you can buy electricity credit anytime online or by phone, or at your local shop.”

Wilma gave an assurance during the meeting that unlike some British suppliers, NIE Energy does not charge extra for ‘pay as you go’, with a Keypad. In fact, NIE Energy goes the other way and gives Keypad customers 2.5% discount off the standard price of electricity.

NIE Energy’s Keypad also comes with a handy unit which gives details of how much electricity is being used in the home at any time and how much it is costing, a good way to cut down on wastage.

Another way to get discounted electricity is to go for Keypad Powershift. It is the same as Keypad in that you pay as you go along and get discounted electricity, but on top of this, you get cheaper electricity at all times except around tea time Monday to Friday (5-8pm now and 4-7pm when clocks change).

Wilma went on: “Powershift won’t suit everyone, but for people who are in the house during the day and have an early tea, or can prepare it earlier, it will save them money.

“The key to making savings with Powershift is to avoid using energy greedy appliances at the peak hours such as your washing machine, tumble dryer, dishwasher, and immersion heater.”
