Access to Benefits Goes Green
22 Jul 2009
Local energy company, NIE Energy, has provided free energy saving bulbs to Access to Benefits who will be handing them out at events throughout the Dungannon and South Tyrone area.
Access to Benefits, otherwise known as A2B, is a not-for-profit organisation working to improve benefit uptake for people of retirement age.
Kathryn Kyle from NIE Energy said: “NIE Energy is keen to help people use less electricity and reduce bills. One simple way to do this is to replace standard light bulbs with energy saving ones. An energy saving bulb uses a fifth of the electricity of a normal bulb so each bulb, when put in a frequently used light, can save up to £10 a year off your electricity bill.
“It used to be that energy saving bulbs were bigger than standard bulbs and either didn’t fit or poked out the top of the lamp shade. That’s not the case anymore. You can now get energy saving bulb equivalents of nearly every shape of bulb you might need, and they’re nice and bright as well.
“We’re delighted to be able to give bulbs to Access to Benefits so older people can reap the benefits of using energy saving bulbs in their homes.”
Hilary Doherty, Community Development Officer at A2B, added: “A2B promotes its online benefits calculator for the over 60s, www.a2b.org.uk, in a range of ways, including attendance at events for older people. Low energy light bulbs are distributed at such events, for example the ongoing series of ‘rural road shows’ in the Dungannon and South Tyrone area.”
