NIE Energy Generation Contract

Introduction

NIE Energy is keen to encourage the installation of renewables and CHP in Northern Ireland. To help customers to realise the value of the electricity generated by these sources, we offer customer rewards for both NI Renewable Obligation Certificates (NIROCs) (If applicable) and for electricity that is generated but isn't used on the premises (Export).

The information on this site explains what NIE Energy will offer and how to apply. It enables you to download the application form and the Terms and Conditions, which will constitute the Contract between NIE Energy and the generator.

NIE Energy are only licensed to operate within the Northern Ireland market, so you can only apply for this tariff if your installation is in Northern Ireland.

NIE Energy's offer

NIE Energy offers generators a payment for both the NIROCs on accredited generation and for electricity that is exported (i.e. power which you generate but don't use on the premises). The diagram below explains this.

Exporting electricity

Why should you choose the NIE Energy Generation Contract?

  1. The NIE Energy Generation Contract will help generators to obtain more value from their installation, obtaining payment on generation, as well as exported electricity.
  2. NIE Energy sets the price we will offer in advance of each year. This allows customers to calculate the expected income they can earn from their renewable generator for the year ahead.
  3. As an Agent, NIE Energy can manage your NIROC application and administration processes, which should make it easier for you to obtain NIROCs.

Who can sign up for NIE Energy Generation Contract?

You can benefit from this Contract if any of the following apply to you:

  1. Your renewable generator is 1MWe or less
  2. Your CHP generator is 500kWe or less

For renewable installations, you must agree to sell NIE Energy both the NIROCs and the export electricity (If applicable).

If your generator is less than 100kW click here.

If your generator is between 100kW and 1MW click here.

NIROCs

NIROCs are available for every MWh (1000kWh) of accredited renewable generation.

Ofgem administer the process of accrediting and issuing NIROCs.

This year the government have introduced double ROCs whereby all electricity generated after the 1st April 2009 by generating stations with a capacity of up to 50kw will now receive 2 NIROCs per MWh.

This means that generators who produce their own renewable energy will now see return on their investment within a shorter period.

NIE Energy currently pays £38.00 per NIROC therefore double ROCs will equate to £76.00 per MWh with this figure due to be revised in September 2009.

You can either opt to appoint NIE Energy to act as your Agent and receive payment based on each kWh of generation or carry out the administration yourself.

1) Click here if you are 50kW or less  - appointing NIE Energy to act as your Agent (Recommended).

2) Click here if you opt to carry out your own Ofgem / ROC administration.

For all customers

Declarations

You will also need to complete an Information Declaration and a Permitted Ways Declaration. This needs to be submitted at the start of the obligation period (April).

If NIE Energy are acting as an Agent on your behalf we can sign these declarations and submit them to Ofgem.

If NIE Energy are not acting as Agent, the forms you are required to submit are below.

word document Information Declaration
word document Permitted Ways Declaration
word document Export Only declaration (This declaration is only to be completed if none of the electricity generated is used on site and it is ALL exported back to the grid)

Meter readings (unless you have a half hour online meter)

You will be required to read both the generation meter and export meter and submit the readings to NIE Energy. NIE Energy will contact you when export meter readings and/or generation meter readings are required. For the majority of customers, this will be once a year. Where possible, customers will be asked to submit readings through e-mail. NIE Energy will send you a reminder when meter readings are required.

If you are managing your own Ofgem process Ofgem will notify you directly when they require generation meter readings.

You should take meter readings of both your generation meter and export meter on the date your Ofgem registration becomes effective.
