Frequently Asked Questions

What would happen if everyone signed up for Eco Energy?

There is a limited supply of renewable energy so NIE Energy will have to 'cap' the amount of customers that we can take. Currently, we have enough capacity for around 25,000 domestic customers.

Can business customers sign-up for Eco Energy?

NIE Energy no longer supply Eco Energy to business customers. Business customers can choose to buy green electricity from a number of independent suppliers - Ofreg can supply a full list by calling 028 9031 1575

What happens if the wind does not blow?

When you sign up for Eco Energy, NIE Energy match your electricity needs by purchasing an equivalent amount of renewable power. The quality of your supply will remain as reliable as before.

How does the green electricity get to my house?

There is no actual difference in the electricity that is supplied to your home. The only difference is that NIE Energy is buying less electricity from Power Stations who use fossil fuel and more from renewable sources.

Where does the 'green or renewable energy' come from?

Most renewable energy in Northern Ireland is generated by wind, but there are small amounts which come from Hydro and Biomass.

Why are Economy 7 customers not eligible for Eco Energy?

Due to the pricing structure of E7 i.e. two different unit rates, NIE Energy is unable to offer Eco Energy to these customers, at this time.

Will the price of Eco Energy increase?

It is expected that Eco Energy will remain the same unit price as standard Home Energy electricity for the foreseeable future. If there is a change in price to standard Home Energy electricity, this will also apply to the cost of an Eco Energy unit of electricity.
